Camping Activities you can Enjoy in Ohio https://www.mohicanadventures.com/campingactivities/ Fri, 27 Mar 2020 02:35:35 +0000 https://www.mohicanadventures.com/?p=3154 Camping Activities you can Enjoy in Ohio

Everyone has different ideas about what a family camping adventure involves. Some people enjoy primitive camping and hiking through forests or kayaking along rivers. Others prefer the relative luxury of RV camping and a good selection of family-friendly activities. If you choose Mohican Adventures adjacent to the Mohican State Forest for your camping adventure, you can have it all. They offer more Fun Center activities than any other resort in the Mohican area.

RV Camping

If you want to enjoy all the amenities of modern life while surrounded by the beauty of nature, Mohican Adventures offer 30/50 Amp electric, water, and sewer hook-up. So you won’t need to use a generator and you can charge your batteries for your RV while staying on the edge of Ohio’s most scenic forest area.

Primitive Camping

For families who prefer to get back to nature, Mohican Adventures also offers primitive campsites where you can pitch your tent on a plot with a shape and size designed by Mother Nature. Some sites are open-area while others are wooded. Choose the site best suited to the size of your tent and your interests.

Adventure Golf

There are few family-friendly activities more popular than mini-golf. Mohican Adventures boasts 3 illuminated courses with different levels of difficulty to suit all abilities. You’ll need skills to prevail on the Grist Mill Challenge but lots of luck to win on the Adventure Course, with its water hazards and rock obstacles. The Level Skills Course is for those experienced mini-golf players who really love to show off.

Go-Kart Racing

If you love to get your adrenaline pumping, there’s nothing better than a competitive go-kart track. Mohican Adventures feature 2 go-cart tracks.

The Family Track offers a fun drive for adults and skillful children alike, as long as the kids are at least adult drives.

The Slick Track offers a more serious challenge for drivers aged 16 or older and in possession of a valid driver’s license. Challenge your mom, dad, and granny to see who really drives best in your family. But watch out for Granny’s tricks!

Aerial Adventure Course

Anyone who thinks they could be a marine, or possibly a monkey, will love the challenge presented by the aerial obstacle courses at Mohican Adventures. There are 6 levels of rope courses presenting different levels of difficulty and ranging in height from 12 to 42 feet above the ground.

You prove your rookie skills on the 2 green courses that qualify you to try out the blue courses. Nimble ninjas can progress on to the more challenging red course and ultimate black course. All the courses test your agility, strength, and coordination. Please note that the minimum age for the green course is 5, 7 for blue, and 11 for red and black.

Canoeing & Kayaking

Families who enjoy water sports and nature will love exploring the Black Fork of the Mohican River in canoes or kayaks provided by Mohican Adventures. You can paddle 7 miles down the river Frye’s Landing or make a full day of it and paddle 15 miles from an upstream location back to Mohican Adventures.

Rafting & Tubing

For less strenuous river adventures, hire a raft or tube from Mohican Adventures and simply float down the river. This adventure takes between 3 and 5 hours, depending upon whether you want to paddle to speed along your journey or just sit back and let nature take its course.

Hiking and biking

Mohican Adventures is close to Mohican State Park, which features 13 miles of hiking trails. The adjacent State Forest offers another 32 miles of hiking trails. There is also a 24½-mile designated trail for enthusiastic mountain bikers.

Hiking is a great way for the whole family to appreciate the beauty of nature in Ohio. The Clear Fork of the Mohican River cuts a picturesque gorge through the Mohican State Park. The Lyons Falls Trail follows the gorge and boasts 2 waterfalls and 15 species of nesting warblers, while the Pleasant Hill Trail shadows the lakeshore.

The surrounding forest with well-wooded rolling hills is a great place to enjoy nature walks. Watch out for red fox, opossum, raccoons, whitetail deer, wild turkey, and unusual birds. With hiking and biking trails that start from the Mohican Adventures campground, it’s easy to introduce even the youngest members of your family to the Great Outdoors.

Naturalist Programs

The Mohican State Park offers daily naturalist activities for the general public during the summer from Memorial Day Weekend through the Sunday of Labor Day Weekend. Events include a Junior Naturalist Program for kids aged 7 through 14, guided nature hikes, family games, and weekend movies in the amphitheater.

Fishing

Fishing is permitted within the Mohican State Park on the Clear Fork River, which is well stocked with brown trout, smallmouth bass, and other fish species. Pleasant Hill Lake is also popular with boat anglers. You’ll find largemouth bass toward the western end of the lake, which is relatively shallow and mud-bottomed. Smallmouth bass frequent the shoreline near the dam toward the southeastern end of the lake.

Top 5 Activities you can do in Ohio https://www.mohicanadventures.com/top-5-activities-you-can-do-in-ohio/ Mon, 16 Mar 2020 01:32:38 +0000 https://www.mohicanadventures.com/?p=3098 Our friends at https://trip101.com/ have a ton of knowledge on traveling and the best places to visit in the area. Check this out:

Are you planning a trip to Ohio

Of course, visiting the big cities of Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati should be on your itinerary, but what about when you want to get off the beaten track and escape into nature? Well, thankfully, you can do that too! And you don’t have to visit an Amish community to disconnect from modern life! Ohio has some stunning national parks and outdoor activities just waiting for you to discover them.

With that in mind, we’ve decided to help you plan your trip to The Buckeye State. In this post, we’ll look at the top 5 best activities in Ohio. Hopefully, our post will help you to plan out your vacation and really make the most of it!

1.Get out into the great outdoors and hike

No matter where you travel to in Ohio, there’s great hiking. There’s the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and Hocking Hills for a start! Whether you want to spend your vacation trekking through forests, appreciating views from hilltops, or being inspired by rugged cliffs, you’ll find a hike in Ohio to suit you!

One of the best hikes in the Mohican Area is a place called Lyons Falls. It’s easily accessible from Loudonville. Other awesome hikes include The Gorge, Firetower, and Covered Bridge. If you need help or information to find them, just ask the friendly staff at Mohican Adventures!

2. Enjoy fun for the whole family

If you’re traveling with the family, you’ll want a whole range of activities that will be able to keep everyone entertained, right?!

One day, you could be teeing off at an adventure golf course and seeing who the best in the family is. The next day, you could be looking down from the treetops at an aerial adventure park. Even if you don’t have a head for heights, this is a lot of fun! You can do courses according to difficulty, so if you’re new to treetop assault courses (and everyone is at some point), you don’t have to do something that ends up being too scary!

If aerial adventures and golf aren’t high octane enough for you, then how about challenging yourselves and others to a test of nerve and skill with go-karting? Race against family members and friends, or just try to beat your personal best on a track that suits you. If you’re looking for somewhere to do all of these, head for the fun centre at Mohican Adventures campground! You’re sure to have an incredible time!

3. Get wet and wild on Ohio’s rivers

All of the activities above are undoubtedly great fun, but some people might think that they’re a bit dry! Ohio can get pretty hot in the summers, so why not check out some ways to stay entertained and keep cool at the same time?

Stand up paddleboarding has exploded in popularity and is currently one of the fastest-growing sports in the world. There are plenty of locations in Ohio where you can try this serene and relaxing, yet challenging sport.

Looking for something that will get the adrenaline flowing a little more? There are tons of other activities you can take part in on Ohio’s rivers that will do just that. Rafting is great fun as part of a team, while tubing will get you down the river faster than anything else! Prefer to go solo and work those arms out? A canoe or a kayak might be for you! Like the super fun activities listed in the point above, you can take part in some really cool watersports activities at Mohican Adventures – just check out their river trips!

4. Ditch your hotel and connect with nature

When it comes to finding a place to stay in Ohio, hotels are all well and good in the big cities, but when you’re in the great outdoors you might want something with a little more, let’s say… character!

To really connect with nature, why not consider camping? Staying in a tent means you’ll get to experience the sights and sounds of nature on the other side of your canvas wall, and who knows, you might even get to sleep better! For those travelling in an RV, campsites are a great option too where you can hook up your vehicle and enjoy all your home comforts before stepping outside and enjoying the flora and fauna of Ohio.

Camping is a little too primitive for you and you don’t have an RV? Don’t worry, you’re still not out of options… how about renting a cabin instead?! These are great for group and family celebrations and a holiday you’ll really remember!

5. Get off the beaten track in the national parks

Ohio is home to 59 areas designated as national parks, so you don’t just have to take our word for it that it’s stunningly beautiful! The most popular include the Wayne National Forest, Hocking Hills State Park, and the favorite of locals and tourists alike, Cuyahoga National Park. One of the coolest ways to see Cuyahoga National Park is by train – the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad has lots of train tours which can be tailored to your needs – whether you’re traveling with the family or on a solo backpacking trip! It’s an easy way to see stunning forests, farmlands, and flora and fauna along the Cuyahoga River. Make sure you pack your camera, as you’ll see coyotes and eagles, as well as awesome panoramic views!

The best thing about Cuyahoga is that it’s just a hop, skip, and a jump from the big cities of Cleveland and Akron!

So, now that you know five of the best activities in Ohio…

It’s time to start booking your trip to The Heart of It All. And one of the best places that you can experience Ohio, is at Mohican Adventures. This awesome site has places for camping, and you can do all of the activities mentioned above and more there! So, it looks like you have a good starting point for your Ohio vacation!

Our History https://www.mohicanadventures.com/have-you-heard-our-full-story-history-of-how-a-little-mom-and-pop-shop-grew-into-our-now-booming-family-owned-business/ Sat, 22 Feb 2020 17:07:32 +0000 https://www.mohicanadventures.com/?p=3088                              -Mohican Area’s first & finest Canoe Livery, since 1961-

Our company’s history begins back before most of our employees were born. It goes back to a time when a small junior high school student, Dick Frye, bought his first canoe. He paid $1 down for the boat and $1 per week to pay it off.

Eventually, Dick started his own livery in 1961, beginning with just 14 aluminum canoes and a few customers. “The Mohican Canoe Livery” was originally located at the intersection of Route 3 and 97. Dick’s idea grew and other canoe liveries, including another of Dick’s own, began to pop up around the area.

In 1969, a 15-year-old boy, named Doug Shannon, was hired by Dick to help after the July flood. Then, in 1974, Doug leased Dick’s second canoe livery called “Dick Frye’s Canoe Livery,” located where our canoe livery now stands. In 1979 Doug and his wife, Patty, bought “The Mohican Canoe Livery” from Dick, and combined the two businesses into its current location. The business also had an outdoor roller skating rink, which was located on the now, Level Skills Mini-Golf Course. Our present-day canoe trips offer a 7-mile trip ending at “Frye’s Landing,” named in honor of Dick for his entrepreneurship in founding the canoeing business in Ohio.

The next year, in 1980, Doug and Patty bought “Clayton’s Canoe Livery,” a canoe livery located where the Grist Mill Mini-Golf Course currently stands today. The building which Clayton used as an office became a trading post operated by Al Combs, and eventually became part of our campground, known as Al’s Cabin. Already, Doug was establishing a tradition of expansion and development within the business.

In the early ’80s, Loudonville Go-Karts was built, and the Mini Golf courses followed shortly after. “The Mohican Canoe Livery” became “The Mohican Canoe Livery and Fun Center,” offering more than just canoeing, but a whole day (or two’s) worth of fun!

In 1998, “Mohican Campground and Cabins” was added to our family business. When first bought, the campground had only two cabins (present day’s A-frame 2, and the Century House), a picnic shelter, and RV sites with only electricity and water. Our present-day campground offers 45 cabins, sleeping two to sixteen, 185 RV sites with electric, water, and sewer, and 175 primitive tent camping sites. We have added two modern shower houses, an indoor pool and hot tub, four playgrounds, a basketball court, sand volleyball court, soccer field, and horseshoe pits, along with hiking and biking trails that start right from here. We are continually adding to the park to offer our customers the best “adventure” in Mohican.

Many of the beautiful cabins added throughout the years have been built by our own employees with logs cut, harvested, and peeled from Shannon property. While most of the cabins are new, many have a history all of their own. The Century House was a part of the Underground Railroad and no one knows for sure how far back it dates. The Chuck Wagon used to be a restaurant located near Mel’s Shelter. After it closed down, it was turned into a bunkhouse cabin that currently sleeps 15 people. Mel’s Kamper Cabin used to be the check-in building at the roller skating rink, before becoming a snack shop at Frye’s landing, and now, one of our original cabins.

In 2004, the “Mohican Canoe Livery,” “Big Boulder Falls Adventure Golf,” “Loudonville Go-Karts,” and “Mohican Campground and Cabins” all came under one business name – “Mohican Adventures.” The name change gave the company a more unified look that captures the possibility for adventure that we offer guests.

It is not all about hard work and expansion, though. Our canoe family has had a lot of fun over the years. On April Fools Day in 1986, our canoe livery, along with others in the area, built a canoe pyramid 87 feet in length and 40 feet high, using 465 canoes and taking eight hours to build! Don’t believe it? The picture can be viewed today at the canoe livery. Our canoe family also has a history of participating in company outings such as white water rafting trips and caving, along with having company cookouts during the summer.

The Shannons aim not only to make sure their guests are provided with quality service and an enjoyable stay but that their employees are treated like family. Their company has often been considered home to many employees and a landmark for our community. This may be the reason why many off-the-clock employees, and others from the community, showed up to help move boats away from the rising river during the food on July 10th, 2006.
Doug and Patty have been honored numerous times for their achievements and efforts. In 1994, Doug was given the National Association of Canoe Liveries & Outfitter’s most prestigious award – The Frank A. Jones Memorial Award. Bruce Kerfoot, president of the organization, said, “Shannon exemplifies what all outfitter and livery operators strive to achieve – consistent, safe, quality professional service to the paddling public.” Kerfoot also noted that the award belongs to two people, because “Doug and his wife, Patty, are a team.”

The company also received an award that every employee helped to earn and can be proud of. Mohican Adventures was named Mohican Area Growth Foundation’s 2005 Business of the Year for leadership in establishing year-round recreation and tourism in Mohican Country.

Josh and Michelle Gray, alongside Matt and Lindsay Carr, who have collectively taken over running the business, have continued to advance the company.

Josh and Michelle Gray have been instrumental in building the 45 cabins, the new pool and conference center, and improving the RV sites and the addition of the 40 acres of primitive camping sites. Josh and Michelle, along with the staff of Mohican Adventures, received the 2006 President’s Award from Professional Paddlesports of America.

Matt and Lindsay Carr have taken over the Canoe Livery & Fun Center, instrumenting the construction of the Mohican Adventures Aerial Adventure Park in the Fall of 2013. The Aerial Park opened in the 2014 season, providing guests with a new “level” of adventure, allowing our guests to explore Mohican at new heights of 12 to 42 feet above the ground. This will be a staple offering to our area in times of high water when the river may be closed.

With the pioneering of our past and the foundations that this business was built upon, we can only look forward to even greater success and memories for the future.
